2024 District Art Contest Winners: Celebrating Talent and Creativity

At MASBA, we are proud to showcase the incredible talent of students from across Texas through our annual District Art Contest. This year’s theme, “Roots and Routes,” brought out powerful and meaningful artwork that highlights the richness of Latino heritage and student creativity.

After a competitive selection process by our guest judge Sonya Cuellar, we are excited to announce the top three winners:

  • 1st Place: La Muerte Dijo Si… Yo Digo No! by Yaretzi Barrera Alapizco, Ector County ISD – awarded a $1,000 arts grant.
  • 2nd Place: Change Is Constant by Jocelyn Bedolla, Aldine ISD – awarded a $750 arts grant.
  • 3rd Place: Mi Abuelo Goyo by Emily Lucio, Aldine ISD – awarded a $500 arts grant.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all participating districts and their dedicated arts staff for ensuring the safe travel of artwork to San Antonio from across the state, including from places as far as El Paso and Amarillo.

Our Theme: Roots and Routes

MASBA-member districts are invited to paint the town red (or blue or yellow) at our annual conference! All districts may bring up to seven high school student artworks for display at our hosting hotel: The Westin Riverwalk, San Antonio. Student artwork will be judged by an invited artist to determine first, second, and third place — all three of which will receive grants to support their artistic careers! Students also have the option to enter their artwork into our online auction that starts and ends with our conference.

Districts must select three artworks for competition purposes. Read through the contest rules and restrictions here.

Selection & Submission

Districts are responsible for adjudicating their student artwork. We recommend the creation or use of existing Selection Committees. Teachers are invited to participate and we provide a sample lesson plan for those who wish to include it in their instruction. Artwork release forms (required for district entry) can be found here.

Artwork must be two-dimensional, flat (e.g., no stretched canvas or relief work) and can be no larger than 24” x 36″. Adhering to dimensions is crucial for purposes of uniformity. Member districts are responsible for transporting their art piece(s) to the 2024 MASBA conference. Districts may bring up to seven artworks, but must decide which three will be entered for judging and scholarship consideration.

Interested member districts must confirm their intent to participate by emailing pedro@masbatx.org before May 10th.

Our contest contains a digital submission portion for organizing purposes. District coordinators must submit student artwork through our Google Form by August 16th. Before completing the entry form, please have ready a digital copy of student artwork and parent information.
